  If we all pull together, we will see it is not that difficult to achieve a solution. After all, there are not that many possible settlements to consider and choose from. Yet, considering that the conflict has nothing but scaled up since 1947, if we do not finish off the conflict, the conflict will end up finishing us all off. We rely on our political leaders to resolve our societies' problems, but nothing is ever accomplished because politicians only do what the wealthiest families want them to do.   The assassination of the Iranian supreme leadership on February 28th and the subsequent Iranian response closing the Strait of Hormuz has submerged us all in a deeply concerning conflict, which threatens to choke the world's economies, if not to engulf the entire Middle East in death and destruction. U.S. President Donald Trump has recently been making significant efforts to pull out of the war; however, we see once more that our animal instinct is not to resolve disputes peacefully, but to fight them out brutally. Lamentably, contrary to what we are indoctrinated to think, Civilization has not make us any better; but now we have learned that we will have a higher chance of winning, if we establish alliances with other peoples. Consequently, conflicts nothing but scale up, and we only start seeking peace once one of the sides comes to terms with the reality, that they simply cannot fight anymore.

    

  Given the very special bond of friendship between the U.S. and Israel, the mortal enmity between Israel and Iran has turned the U.S in Iran's Great Satan. This is to say that, so long the actual roots of the Israel-Iran enmity are not tackled, Iran will persist looking for ways to hurt the U.S.. In other words, - unless the U.S. has any intention of breaking its friendship with Israel - until we decide to roll up our sleeves and find a solution to the Palestenian- Israeli conflict, it will be impossible to solve the current crisis, but we will only be forever battling the hydra's heads. Definitely, what originally was just a regular conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, has throughout the years slowly but steadily propagated across the region, poisoning the relationships between more and more people, until today it has become an uncontrolled blazing hatred between Jews and Muslims.

  If human beings are as intelligent as we are constantly boasting to be, how can it be possible that all what we are able to think of to resolve conflicts among peoples is to fight it out until there is only one man standing? We always look back, we never look forward. All what we can think of is the many instances we have been wronged, and we never stop for a minute to ponder: moving forward, what could be the best solution to our differences? We always divide the world between the good guys and the bad guys, and all what we can envision is that we - the good guys - should not settle for anything less than total victory and supremacy over the bad guys. Yet, for almost all of our history, we have been very tolerant - much more tolerant than today - accepting other folks' cultures, traditions and beliefs. It is only roughly since the French Revolution that the intellectual elites (sort of accidentally) discovered that if they manage to induce a sense of collective identity into the populace, they would have us all divided in groups docile to their leadership. Now we do not think for ourselves anymore, but just follow our intellectual leaders, because only they have the knowledge necessary to discuss topics as complex as politics and economics. Yet, is it really impossible to find a peaceful solution to the increasingly exacerbated 80-years-old conflict between Jews and Muslims, that has now come to engulf the entire world? After all, there are not that many possible settlements to consider and choose from.

Undoubtedly, this belief was further fueled by the centuries-old longing for a return to the homeland of Zion.

We can condemn it as antisemitism and with that manage to silence any criticism and the expression of any adversion; but the sentiment will nevertheless remain there, latent, until the day it boils over.

In that sense, there is little argument that Israel's economic and military success is truly remarkable. Indeed, Israel is not just the most developed, but also the economically and militarily most powerful nation in the Middle East. However, it is far more questionable whether - in today's world - Israeli people are now any safer than if the State of Israel had not come into being. It seems difficult to escape the conclusion that something is not working in Israel's strategy. Clearly, it is already a long time that military superiority is not enough to win most wars. The Jewish elite would make the Jewish people a good service if they come to grips with the fact that, in the modern world, wars are not just fought between humans, but between ideologies.

  Psychologically, ideologies function as binding mechanisms: Given that humans undeniably feel a sharp tendency to follow those ideas which fit their interest best, if we share the same ideas it is reasonable to think we should likewise share similar interests. Let us turn on our brains once and forever: Would have the 13-Colonies' rebellion simply collapsed, if George Washington (or, for that sake, any number of founding fathers) had been assassinated? Unfortunately, as Vice-President Vance's comments highlighted, at this point the U.S. Government is Israel's only ally. Certainly, the cause of Israel has become increasingly unpopular, not only overseas, but in the U.S. itself as well. The American consumer is not going to accept for much longer to pay for Israel's defense. President Trump's derisive remarks on Benjamin Netanyahu are a clear sign that America's patience is reaching its end. It definitely does not take a sociologist to realize that Israel is becoming more and more a liability for any American politician, and - as influential as the Jewish lobby may be - it is a matter of time before the U.S. will no longer be able to maintain its support for Israel.

  In 1415, right after the battle of Agincourt, no one in England could have even entertained the idea that they would eventually lose all their territorial holdings in "the land of the French". Yet, today we know that England simply did not stand a chance of being able to bring the vast and highly-populated French nation into submission. Even in such early stages of the French-national-identity ideology, there was simply no way that the French people were ever going to accept England's overlordship. The Jewish elite would do themselves a good service, if they come to terms with the fact that Israel simply will never be able to bring the whole Muslim world into submission.

Now, precisely because Israel is currently so strong the main difficulty resides in having the Jewish people understand the long-term benefits of making concessions (certainly, it is always hardest to take the decision of selling a stock, when it has reached record heights).

  Clearly, it will not suffice to convince Israel's political leaders. If Israel's public opinion is not on board, any attempt at a peaceful resolution is destined to fail. If - against the Jewish elite's judgement - an Israeli president ever tries to negotiate a definite peace agreement, there should be little doubt that he will not last long in power: either he is removed democratically or he will follow Yitzhak Rabin's fate. This is to say that it is not realistic to hope that Israel will be inclined to the idea of making concessions in exchange of peace; but initiative and political pressure from international institutions are going to be necessary. In that sense, the U.S. Administration, in general, and President Trump, in particular are better positioned than anyone else to play the crucial role. For many obvious reasons, no one better than President Trump to talk the Jewish elite into the long term benefits of negotiating a definite settlement with the Muslim world. Moreover, the acceptance of such role constitutes a fantastic opportunity to re-establish the United States as the Guardian of world peace.

  It is well known that the key to a successful negotiation is to stay focused on one's own real needs and use as bargaining chips anything that is not as important. We should therefore ask what is what really matters to the Jewish people. As mentioned at the beginning, if we consider the origins of the Zionist movement, we will have to conclude that safety and respect for Jewish culture and traditions has always been the main concern. In addition, undeniably, the first Zionist felt a strong desire to return to the homeland of Israel. Certainly, safety and respect are such reasonable demands that there should have never been any conflict to meet them. However, given that there were already some other people living in the ancestral lands of Israel, the creation of the new State of Israel and subsequent expulsion of the Palestinians from their homes, have given rise to humankind's most severe challenge. Today, many voices could reasonably question the degree to which United Nations General Assembly Resolution 181 of November 29, 1947, was well taken, however, even if we were to agree with such concerns, at this point no one can reasonably expect Jewish people to accept any reversal of said decision. Clearly, it is just not realistic. On the other hand, the natural desire to hold on to Israel's post 1947 territorial gains will only compromise the achievement of Israel's fundamental objective.

  Now, no one can expect Israel to make a concession of such a magnitude for anything less than its fundamental objective. If Israel is to accept returning to the borders defined in Resolution 181, it can only be in exchange for the Muslim world's recognition of the State of Israel, and an unequivocal affirmation that the safety and culture of the Jewish people will be respected. 

  
  

  16. Given that Iran will not be able to obstruct a peace agreement once Palestinians have agreed to it, all what is needed to solve the whole conflict is to offer Palestenians a satisfactory and just solution, in accordance to international law.

  
  

  Needless to say, at the present time the Iranian regime represents the biggest obstacle to the recognition of the State of Israel. As mentioned before, since the early days of Ayatollah Khomeini, Iran has taken the Palestenian cause as its own. Yet, if Iran's claim is to be the champion and protector of Palestine, all justification to oppose the recognition of Israel will fall apart, as soon as the Palestinian people agree to the settlement. We should therefore be able to resolve the whole conflict much more easily than what we have always thought; since it certainly should not be difficult at all to offer a satisfactory solution to the Palestinian people, which would not require the destruction of the State of Israel. Of course, it is possible that Iran's concern for the Palestenian cause is not sincere, but is only a strategical pose. However, if Iran is to obstruct a peace agreement after Palestenians have agreed to it, Iran will immediately lose all the public-relations edge it has been enjoying since the beginning of the air strikes. There should then be little doubt that, the day Iran loses the world's sympathy, it will not be long before it will have to concede.

  
  
  
  
  Now, everybody is free to opine that the plan proposed herein it is not going to succeed. However, we should all agree that it is a much better option than all what we have considered so far. We just need to come to terms with the fact that, in order to resolve the conflict which has now come to engulf the entire world, we need to address the problem at its roots. It is certainly a shame that, as intelligent as we believe to be, still in the XXI century, all what we are able to think of to resolve disputes among peoples is to fight it out until there is only one man standing.
